About
About 79 years ago, something happened that would affect my entire existence. My grandfather Samuel Chandler Bend, was a race car driver and it was his chosen profession until one tragic evening. A bolt of lightening struck near the barn he was working in. A Morgan horse standing inside became frightened. The horse reared up and landed on my Grandfathers head crushing his skull nearly killing him. Grandpa survived, but was left with some permanent damage to his eyes which left him blind.
In the 1920’s chiropractic was new and foreign to most. Some were proclaiming deaf people could hear again, and blind people can see. My great-grandfather soon learned of B.J. Palmer, the founder of chiropractic and heard about the miracles happening in Davenport, IA. He decided to take my Grandfather to have B.J. look him over. Dr. Palmer met with Samuel and quickly found his optic nerve was severely damaged from the crushing blow of the Morgan horse. Although B.J. was unable to restore Samuel’s vision, he educated my great-grandfather how the release of nerve interference could help with a lot of serious conditions.
My great-grandfather was so blown away by the results of chiropractic care, he sold some of his precious livestock from his farm and enrolled my blind grandfather and his sister into Palmer Chiropractic. Although my grandfather was not going to have his sight returned, he gained life purpose and a career in helping others. They both graduated and became Doctors of Chiropractic and Samuel later met and married Dr. Hannah Katherine Bend D.C. They practiced for years together and owned the first chiropractic magazine called Chiropractic Home.
Three generations later, I am here in Arroyo Grande. I get to change people’s lives on a daily basis.
